Marie Hatchell has news on her German Shepherd Shadow. "He is now a designated Disaster Stress Relief Dog and I am his certified handler. Shadow is certified with Therapy Dogs International (TDI). After two years of planning, TDI has just introduced a new program called Disaster Stress Relief Dogs which grew out of their work at the Oklahoma City bombing, the Pentagon and World Trade Center sites after 9/11. Earning the DSR designation is like getting a PHD in therapy work! On September 27 TDI offered the second test for DSR in Fredericksburg, VA. The test is from 9-5 and extremely grueling and thorough, and only 10 dogs and handlers are tested at a time. Shadow and I both passed being one of only six teams to do so. Shadow is a working therapy dog making weekly visits to Lake Prince SeniorCenter in Suffolk and Maryview Oncology Unit." For more information contact TDI.org or Marie Hatchell at 255-4199.

From Denise Call: Calla’s Famis Magic Man, “Malcolm” did it again. Best Puppy In Show December 6 at Tidewater Dog Performance Club Multi-Breed Show shown by his owner and proud momma, Denise Call.

From Leslie Wemhoff and the pack of TymeLes Companions:

Not only did Miss Darden (TymeLes LaDarth v Sdny) finish her CD on October 31 at the crowded all breed pavilion in Va Beach, then waltz in on the next morning for BOS points…then also pick up her obedience “bumper leg” at the even more crowded Salisbury MD show last Saturday, but also that’s 4 qualifying outta 4 trials for Darden, that’s 4 Swissies who have given me a CD each (along with a few other titles, too) I’m so proud of my furry children!

Miss Darden now joins her brother, mom, dad, granddaddy Eddie and on back to great great grandparents, too, in being able to walk into a ring in front of strangers and children with wonderful treats and still follow orders often enough to be labeled “obedient” by AKC. Pretty good for not even being recognized by AKC until ’95... the dogs, I mean. I’m still struggling to spell ‘bediance and AKC both and they don’t even use the same alphabet!

Is the learning getting easier? No.... But I must admit my first CD with Chugger took the most tries so far... he’s the one who politely left off lead heeling to politely accept the natchos that child offered. (darn child was asked to leave, but it was too late for us by then...) He’s also the one who once left the ring after perfectly tolerating the thunder and lightning. When it really started to pour he ran over to under the tent to turn around and look back at the dummies in the rain. Then there were a couple of trials of “c’mon, mom, there’s another new friend!” What can I say? I could hardly get mad at him for being too friendly or too smart, could I? ... ... Now I look at the RaylenSunshine son-of-his-daddy and see the same enthusiasm for living fully... will he take as long as his dad to learn to wait ‘til after the trial to show off??

Looks like we may have to try several times with this one, too... big sigh... “we do this for fun... we do this for fun... we do this for fun...” and big thanks to you-all who help us, too...

From Maggie Hayes: Snap took second place in the Novice division of the Tidewater Retriever Club’s fall field trial held in Colonial Heights, VA on 11/24/03. He was the only golden running in a stake of 20 dogs and it was his first competitive field event. One old timer, on seeing his water entry said, “Geez, I didn’t know Goldens could do that!” I am very proud of my little red dawg!

On Dec. 7, Snap finished his NAHRA Started Retriever title at the Mid-Atlantic Region field test held in Cheltenham, MD. In spite of four inches of snow on the fields and ice in the water, that little red dawg brought back all ten birds with great style and gusto! He is now officially SHR SR Fireside Snap N Crackle JH.
