From the President's DeskHas the winter truly and finally given way to spring? The weather the last week or so would make you think so. I love this time of year, when it's nice and cool and fun to work outdoors. So many things to do.
Well our first session has come and gone. The classes ended nicely although not as crowded as they started. A special thanks to Marie Stuart and Denise Call who put forth the effort to teach this past session's classes. Your efforts are appreciated by all.
So, are you making progress towards your training goals for this year? I asked that question lightly in the last PUP. There was a very basic point to it. Many of us started a journey with our companion with a variety of goals in mind. Many may have started with just the simple thought of "I'd like my dog to listen to me." while others may have desires for an OTCH. Regardless of where you intend to go, the point is are you making progress getting there? All forward (and sometimes backwards) progress counts no matter how great or small!! Remember; keep one eye on your goal, one focused on your companion and the peace of mind to enjoy the journey.
We had announced in the last PUP that there would be a video show-n-go in April. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control we won't be holding that date. If you still would like to participate and practice in a formal ring, the Merrimac club is putting on a show-n-go on the same date at their training facility in Hampton.
As everyone knows, the PCOTC hosts a fall obedience trial in October each year. Although October is a long ways off yet, planning and coordinating is already beginning. In the past the club has hosted some excellent shows and received many compliments on the results and quality of our shows. There are many different people doing a variety of jobs that make this all happen. Everything from working on Hospitality and Trophies, to Trial Secretary and Chair. If you are interested in helping in any way with this year's trial, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
Lastly, on May 14th, there will be a general membership meeting held at the Armory for about 15 to 20 minutes starting at 8PM. This meeting will be used to outline new changes in the clubs constitution and get membership vote for those changes. Be present and make yourself count. | |||

On the ATTS testing of March 1, 2003:
First, thank you to all members and non-members who helped prepare and support this service project! Thanks to David, Janice and Mary Ann for Friday evening and to EVERYone who came out on the cold gray Saturday morning. It didn't rain, and the sun actually came out for a pleasant while in the early afternoon. As I taxied him to the airport on Sunday morning our chief tester, Carl, said, "I think that went quite well." Yup.
It was definitely successful. 38 dogs pre-entered, 36 tested and 27 passed. Carl told me that's a pretty normal percentage. Before we started he went through each station explaining the expected behaviors and scoring. He showed how the dog's stress level is supposed to build through the series and that it is not a "good/bad" measure, but rather a management tool for working responsibly with our dog's individual personality - and sometimes a way to get a person to change his technique or even start working with his
dog! Some of us even got to see a dog who did "good" to not pass he demonstrated the exact response needed for the work he does rather than the usual response of his breed to an aggressive person. That would be a combination of training and socialization working with the right personality for the job they chose. I was pretty impressed with that, personally.
Thanks to a whole lot of loans and donations, we came out about $80 ahead on the money, too. More thanks to Denise, Vickie H, David and Mary Ann for food and set-ups and to Janice for asking Dwayne for blinds and assistance.
I have a write-up of tasks, timetables, test evaluators, and estimated costs and equipment so it will be easier to set up and coordinate next time... who's up for chairing the 2005 test? If Merrimac goes with
next March and all continues to go decently, it will be our turn to sponsor again on March 5, 2005... We did good. We will next time, too!
Good work, everyone... Thanks again!

From Kendal Owens: Sassie got her first leg towards her UKC CD in her first UKC trial held on March 8.
From David Hamel: On March 21 & 22, Zoe and I traveled to Rebel Ridge Farms in Delaware to participate in 2 Junior Hunt tests one sponsored by the Labrador RC the other by the DelBay RC. Despite the fact that I arrived on Friday after a 4 hour drive right on time to get Zoe out of the truck and move to the line for the first part of the test, she did very well. Saturday turned out to be a glorious day with enough sunshine to make you just want to curl up and snooze enjoying it. We ended the weekend by qualifying on both days and finishing our Junior Hunter title. We were also joined by Maggie with Snap who was trying for his first leg on Saturday. If you see her and get a chance, ask her about "having the proper equipment" when your dog is called to the line 8-)
From Maggie Hayes: Snap picked up his second Junior Hunter leg at the Tidewater Retreiver Club's hunt test in Povidence Forge, VA on Saturday, April 5. Only 2 more to go!
I made and ate hot meals unmolested. I had unstained, unfurred clothes.
I had quiet conversations on the phone, even if the doorbell rang.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I slept as late as I wanted
And never worried about how late I got to bed or if I could get into my bed.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I cleaned my house every day.
I never tripped over toys, stuffies, chewies, or invited the neighbor's dog over to play.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I didn't worry if my plants, cleansers, plastic bags, toilet paper,
soap or deodorant were poisonous or dangerous.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I had never been peed on
Pooped on, drooled on, chewed on, or pinched by puppy teeth.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and mind.
I slept all night without sharing the covers or pillow.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I never looked into big, soulful eyes and cried.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop a hurt.
I never knew something so furry and four-legged could affect my heart so deeply.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn't put it down.
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was well.
I didn't know how warm it feels inside to feed a hungry puppy.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.
Before I was a Dog Mom, I had never known
the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache,
the wonderment or
the satisfaction of being A Dog Mom

3 to 3 1/2 lbs of liver, beef or chicken
1 C whole wheat flour
4.25 oz jar fresh minced or crushed garlic
2 C white flour
1/2 C corn meal
1 med shaker of grated parmesan cheese
Optional a half a dozen scented candles
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray
Process liver and garlic in food processor or blender until pureed. (note: my processor isn't huge, so I did 1/2 the ingredients at a time, then mixed the two halves in a large bowl)
Add the rest of the ingredients to processor and mix thoroughly...
Spread evenly onto cookie sheet (my mix was about the consistency of cake batter)
Light candles, open windows, and...
Bake for about 30 min, then turn the oven off but leave the brownies inside until they are cool
Use 1 banana at a time. Slice it and put into a cup or blender.
Add about 1 1/2 - 2 cups water. Blend and freeze.
Variations: instead of banana use: parsley, watermelon, oranges, or lemons. Use whatever the dogs like.
I love thee agreeably enough to let your stinky dog hide on the bed after a run through damp leaves, mud and slug infested gardens.
I love thee steadfastly enough to devote a year to raising you from a wobbly speck into a strong healthy adult (who promptly attempts to seize control).
I love thee passionately despite your repeated efforts to probe my ears, eyes and mouth with the same tongue you use for various other atrocities.
I love thee well despite the amazing odors you produce.
I love thee deeply though you use me as a napkin at every opportunity.
I love thee madly despite the various bodily functions you have performed at inappropriate moments and in inappropriate places.
I love thee constantly despite the dog "bladder curfew" I have lived by for many years.
I love thee truly despite the "doggie land mines" hidden in the grass.
I love thee absolutely because you never (well, hardly ever) hog the remote control.
I love thee gratefully because you stay by my side (or on my side).
I love thee devotedly more than clean carpeting, clothing, furniture, floors or walls.
I love thee bravely enough to battle the indomitable flea on your behalf.
I love thee monetarily enough to put the vet's children through college.
I love thee openly I will bear any embarrassment for your furry sake.
I love thee totally more than free time, excess cash or a predictable life.
