Please be aware of a new and very useful Internet service. The Vet Cancer Registry (www.vetcancerregistry.com) was started to collect
meaningful statistical information about cancers in our canine and feline companions. It is now the largest registry of its kind with over 7500 cases
and contributions from veterinarians and veterinary institutions all over the world. It is self-explanatory, user friendly and completely free.
Although designed for veterinarians, I think you will find lots of useful information on it. You can find out how other animals have been treated
for specific cancers, how old they were at the time of diagnosis, and how old they were when they died.
I'm also requesting that you encourage your members to encourage their veterinarians to contribute cases. If your breed is underrepresented it is because your veterinarians aren't contributing. It takes a few minutes to enter a case (this must be done by a veterinarian or a veterinary technician) it is free to them and privacy is strongly enforced.
· The third basic class will begin and the CGC test hel on September 17, 2003. Dave will teach this class. Anita will teach the advance class focusing on advanced games for novice prep beginning September 24th.
· The fall trial is well on the way. Volunteers are needed for various positions. If you can help, please see a board member.
· Nominations for officers and board members will be taking place very soon. Start thinking about who you would like to see on the board next year.

From the Presidents DeskThey say that no news is good news. Well, I don't know that I necessarily subscribe to that theory. Seems to me some news is good and more even better, so pardon my ramblings. I don't know if any of you realized that the July edition of The PUP got a bit thin. I can understand the brags being down a bit as dogs come in and out of competition, but don't be afraid to send in other information about you and your companion(s) or items you come across that might be of interest to the membership at large. Caryl does a fine job with our monthly newsletter, but she loves it when she gets email, so if you come across something please don't hesitate to drop her a note at pupeditor@pcotocdogs.org. This is our way to share information. Our training sessions move on. We are over halfway through the third session and we finally have had AC and a night without thunderstorms. Yippee! This session will be completed on the last Wednesday night in August. For those looking ahead, the fourth session begins on September 17th with the basic orientation and the CGC, and the first full night of classes on the 24th. I'll be teaching the basic class in the fourth session and Anita Ramsey will be working the advanced class with a course on Teaching Skills through Games. So mark your calendars, and plan on being there. We're in the process of changing the dates for our future annual trial. Traditionally we held it during the month of October. Unfortunately, the period from September through early December mark the height of the fall trail period and our trial date is frequently in competition with other clubs holding seminars, training, or trials for attendance. Because of this, the club officers and board have elected to move our annual trial to the month of January starting in 2005. The month of January is extremely void of shows and we feel this would be a good time to pick up additional attendance and still hold a quality trial. We are currently reviewing dates to be considered. For 2004, we are currently planning on holding an agility or obedience seminar during the time frame that we currently held our trial. More information should be coming out on this shortly. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send them on or express them to a board member. Hope your summer finishes off with a bang! David Hamel | |||
How many dogs are needed to change a light bulb?
Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
Rottweiler: Make me.
Lab: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? ? Huh? Can I?
Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.
Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Doberman Pinscher: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.
Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark......
Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.
Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.
Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there....
Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb?
German Shepherd: Alright, everyone stop where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID, "STOP WHERE YOU ARE!!!"
Hound Dog: ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

The annual PCOTC Obedience Trials are just around the corner in October. The club needs everyone's participation
in offering trophies for the competitors. Please be generous and offer a prize or cash or donate to the general fund. For
example, one might offer a basket of dog treats for the Saturday trial for the Highest Scoring Dog in Novice A. Or, a dog specific item
(like a mug with a Golden on it) for the Highest Scoring Golden Retriever in the trial. Be creative! Donate for both days if you can.
If you would like to donate cash, just put the amount and mark it for the General Fund. Do not send the trophies or cash
immediately, Anita will contact you about when and where she needs to collect them. Right now the important thing is your commitment.
Please note that if you donate for a class that has already been donated for, we would like to use your trophy in the General Fund
for another appropriate class. If this happens, and you would prefer that Anita contact you first to discuss, please mark here _______.

From The Flashman
As you PCOTC people know, we have our annual Obedience Trial coming up on October 25 and 26. My mom asked me to write this steward recruitment letter for the PUP since she's been kinda busy with the g-kids this summer.
OK this job isn't brain surgery. No experience necessary, OJT! It's only for 2 days, there's plenty of food and drink, and, not only that, you get to rub elbows with Judges and look important while you answer questions for nervous exhibitors. Hey, and you're a member of this dog club right? What a learning opportunity this is! You'll learn how an obedience ring is conducted and see first hand how to (and in some cases NOT handle) a dog on 3 different class levels. What's more you could be lucky enough to be stewarding a ring where I'm competing. Hey, how's about putting a cooking on my go-out! (kidding!) Anyway, give mom a call or an e-mail. You won't want to miss out on this opportunity.

A man decides he wants a hunting dog, so he goes to a shop in town and says, "Give me the best hunting dog you've got."
The owner takes him into the back room. "This one here's the best one we've got."
"I want to see him in action," said the man.
The owner takes the man out in the field beside the shop. He let the dog loose into the field. "However many barks is how many rabbits is in that field."
The dog barked three times, and a few minutes later, brought back three rabbits. "I'll take it," said the man.
The next day, he went hunting with the dog. He let him loose in the field. The dog barked four times, and brought back four rabbits.
Two days later, they went hunting again, this time in the woods. The man let the dog loose and waited. The dog barked six times, and brought back six rabbits. The next weekend, they again went hunting in the woods. The man let the dog loose. To his suprise, the dog came back with a stick. The man cursed him and threw the stick back in the woods. The dog went back in and came out with another stick.
The man was stumped, and went back to the shop where he bought the dog. He told the owner what happened.
"You idiot," said the owner, "He was trying to tell you that there was more rabbits in those woods than you can shake a stick at!!!"
