From The Presidents DeskIn case you haven't realized it, the rain finally stopped, summer officially arrived and the year is just flying by. Humid, humid, humid. This is where we find how many things we can stick to for no apparent reason.
Our third session has just begun and gotten off to a rocky start with some problems getting into the facilities the first dog day of training. Maggie Hayes is teaching this basic class and we will be adding one week to the end of the schedule to make up for the lost night. We've been in touch with the Armory staff and hopefully have worked out the kinks. Lee Hussey has started the Rally advanced class with some orientation of the signs used in the course. If you still want to jump in to the class, you can download the latest version of the signs and directions at http://www.akc.org/dic/events/obedience/rally.cfm .
The plans for our fall trial are well underway. If you get a call or get stopped by someone asking to help out, please consider it. Even the smallest things add up to the final result of a good trial. I know there is always help needed in Stewarding (Jackie Kirkman), Hospitality (Cathy Broyles), Awards and Trophies (Anita Ramsey) and all the other areas. Also remember that there is always a diner with the judges on the Saturday night between trials. Please mark your calendars and come out and enjoy diner and conversation with everyone.
If you see me walking around with a strange brown dog, it isn't a stray. His name would be Jake and he is the last edition (for awhile anyway) to my family. Come over and say hi. 8-)
Enjoy the summer! David Hamel | |||

The annual PCOTC Obedience Trials are just around the corner in October. The club needs everyone's participation in offering trophies for the competitors. Please be generous and offer a prize or cash or donate to the general fund. For example, one might offer a basket of dog treats for the Saturday trial for the Highest Scoring Dog in Novice A. Or, a dog specific item (like a mug with a Golden on it) for the Highest Scoring Golden Retriever in the trial. Be creative! Donate for both days if you can. If you would like to donate cash, just put the amount and mark it for the General Fund. Do not send the trophies or cash immediately, Anita will contact you about when and where she needs to collect them. Right now the important thing is your commitment. Please note that if you donate for a class that has already been donated for, we would like to use your trophy in the General Fund for another appropriate class. If this happens, and you would prefer that Anita contact you first to discuss, please mark here _______.

Consider registering your dog as a canine blood donor. It's a simple process, and donating blood only takes about a half-hour. Like human blood, canine blood is separated so that many dogs can benefit from the donation of a single dog.
In the southeastern Virginia area, Tidewater Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center (TVECCC) is the only canine blood bank. Begun in 1991, the blood banks is supported by client owned animals only. Dogs eligible to donate blood must meet the following requirements:

· Be between the ages of 1 and 8
· Be over 60 pounds
· Be current on rabies vaccinations and heartworm preventive.
For more information or to put your dog on the donor list, contact TVECCC at (757) 499-5463.
